Focused Practice Area: Supporting children, youth, adults, and families impacted by sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse, and other traumatic experiences.

Hi, I am Jenn...

I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling (Applied Psychology), with a specialization in Counselling Psychology, as well as a Bachelor of Social Work.

I am a Registered Social Worker with experience supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families. I am especially passionate about providing accessible, evidence-based mental health care in rural communities. Having grown up in a rural community myself, I understand both the strengths of small communities and some of the unique challenges that can come with living in them, including limited access to specialized mental health services and the importance of finding someone you can trust when seeking support, I believe meaningful change begins with connection. At the heart of my work is creating a space where you feel safe, understood, and genuinely supported, without judgment and without the expectation that you need to have everything figured out.

My Background

My career has centred around supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families through mental health challenges, trauma, and complex life circumstances. Early in my career, I worked within Child and Family Services in a variety of roles. This work gave me the opportunity to support children, youth, and families experiencing significant adversity and provided me with a strong foundation in understanding trauma, attachment, family relationships, child development, and the many factors that can impact a person’s well-being.

Trauma therapy is a particular focus in my practice. I am deeply committed to supporting children, youth, adults, and families impacted by sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse, and traumatic experiences. As part of my graduate training, I intentionally pursued and completed my clinical practicum at a Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, where I gained focused experience supporting children, youth, and families impacted by abuse and trauma.

More recently, my work as a school-based mental health therapist has allowed me to provide direct counselling and mental health support to children and their families across a wide range of emotional, behavioural, developmental, and relational needs. My work has included supporting anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, emotional and behavioural regulation, executive functioning skill development, coping skills, social and peer relationships, school-related anxiety and transitions, separation and attachment concerns, and difficulties navigating big emotions and challenging behaviours. An important part of this work also involves collaborating with parents, caregivers, educators, and other supports around the child. I provide parenting support, help caregivers better understand the needs underlying a child’s behaviour, and develop practical strategies that strengthen connection, build skills, and support children across home and school environments.

My broader clinical training and experience have also provided opportunities to work with more complex mental health concerns, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and trauma-related difficulties, including PTSD, anxiety and depression.

I have experience facilitating Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills groups for both adolescents and adults. DBT skills focus on practical strategies for managing intense emotions, coping with distress, improving relationships, and responding more effectively to challenging situations. Groups provide a supportive environment for learning and practising skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

I also have experience facilitating CONNECT, an attachment-based parenting program designed to strengthen the relationship between parents and their children or teens. CONNECT helps caregivers better understand the needs and emotions underlying behaviour, respond to challenging situations while maintaining connection, and create a stronger sense of safety and security within the parent-child relationship.

My Approach to Therapy

My approach is warm, collaborative, practical, and grounded in evidence-based care. I draw from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT),  attachment-based approaches, and trauma-informed practice.

But therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. The approach we take should make sense for you, your experiences, your strengths, your needs, and what you hope will be different in your life.

Being invited into someone’s story is something I value deeply. Therapy can involve sharing experiences that are painful, complicated, deeply personal, and sometimes difficult to put into words. The trust involved in that process matters to me, and I approach it with genuine care and respect.

My hope is that when you come into my office, you find a place where you can simply start where you are. Together, we can work toward greater understanding, stronger relationships, practical skills, healing from difficult experiences, and meaningful change in the areas of life that matter most to you.

You don’t need to have the right words or know exactly what you need before reaching out. Sometimes the first step is simply finding someone you feel comfortable talking to.

Trauma Counselling

Adults | Children 6+

Rel8 Counselling  provides a safe space to process the impacts of abuse, violence, or loss

Trauma can affect much more than memories of what happened. It can influence our emotions, relationships, behaviour, sense of safety, ability to trust, and the way we understand ourselves and the world around us.

Trauma counselling at Rel8 provides a safe, compassionate, and evidence-informed space to understand the impacts of difficult experiences, develop skills for managing trauma-related symptoms, and work toward healing at a pace that respects each person's needs and readiness.

Trauma services may support individuals impacted by experiences such as sexual violence, domestic violence, child abuse, traumatic grief and loss, and other overwhelming or distressing experiences.

Trauma Counselling Adult Trauma Therapy For adults who have experienced trauma, I offer evidence-based approaches designed to help reduce trauma-related symptoms, make sense of what happened, and move toward greater safety, confidence, and freedom in everyday life. Child Trauma Therapy 6+ Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) TF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment designed for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and their caregivers. Treatment combines trauma-informed cognitive and behavioural strategies with emotional regulation, coping skills, gradual trauma processing, and caregiver involvement. TF-CBT helps youth better understand and manage trauma-related thoughts, emotions, and reactions while strengthening safety, coping, communication, and supportive caregiver-child relationships.

Groups

Rel8 Counselling offers skills-based and relationship-focused group programming for adolescents, adults, and parents. Groups provide an opportunity to learn practical strategies, build understanding, practise new skills, and connect with others in a supportive environment.

Groups DBT Skills — Adolescents & Youth Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills groups help adolescents develop practical tools for navigating intense emotions, stressful situations, relationships, and everyday challenges. Participants learn skills across four core areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. The group emphasizes understanding emotions, managing difficult moments without making situations worse, communicating effectively, setting boundaries, and building healthier ways of coping. DBT Skills — Adults Adult DBT skills groups provide practical, evidence-based strategies for people who experience intense emotions, difficulty coping with stress, relationship challenges, or patterns of reacting in ways that may not be working for them. Participants develop skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, with an emphasis on applying these strategies to real-life situations. The goal is to build greater awareness, improve emotional regulation, strengthen relationships, and develop healthier ways of responding to life's challenges. CONNECT Parenting CONNECT is an attachment-based parenting program designed to strengthen the relationship between parents or caregivers and their children or adolescents. Rather than focusing only on changing a child's behaviour, CONNECT helps caregivers understand the emotions, needs, and attachment experiences that may be underneath behaviour. Parents learn ways to respond to challenging situations while maintaining connection, setting appropriate limits, and creating a stronger sense of safety and security within the parent-child relationship. CONNECT can be particularly helpful for caregivers who want to better understand their child, reduce conflict, strengthen communication, and build a more connected relationship.
